New Community Orchard in Whitehawk
A new orchard will be planted by the community at the top of the Race Hill in Whitehawk, Brighton.
On Saturday 26 January, between 10am and 2pm residents will help plant and look after the new orchard which will be planted on the land surrounded by Wilson Avenue, Swanborough Drive and Race Hill Allotments.
The project has been set up by Harvest Brighton and Hove, an organisation that encourages the people of Brighton to grow and eat their own food. The organisation helps people to learn how to grow your own food and share your locally produced food with the rest of the local area. Harvest aims to increase the space available to grow food and help people to have a better access to locally grown food. They also aim to teach local people how to grow their own produce and the benefits of buying and eating local produce.
88% of local residents are in favour of the orchard and the space will be ideal for dog walkers, children’s play, nature lovers, picnics. The local residents can get involved in the management of the project, the maintenance and can also share the produce that the orchard provides.
