Java Cafe flat - all sorted
Woodingdean residents and businesses came together to ensure that the flat above the JAVA cafe in Warren Way was refurbished and ready to be rented out to ensure the future of the Java Community Cafe. The following feature will be appearing in the next issue of the Woodingdean Newsletter - that will be distrubuted shortly.
*Enormous thanks have to go to the efforts of the many volunteers, and for the kind monetary donations by local residents and Woodingdean Community Association, who have made it possible to completely refurbish the flat over ‘Java’ Community Café. This means that the future of the cafe, which is used by so many in the village as somewhere to meet their friends and eat well prepared food, is now secured into the foreseeable future and that the flat can be occupied by a local family.
Amongst those who have helped are:
Mears – the Council’s housing repairs contractor who provided volunteers to help with decorating and electrical works.
Cllr Geoff Wells and his wife Sally who spent hours preparing and painting.
Jo from woodingdeaninbusiness.co.uk & the residents of Channel View Road who collected £220 at their Jubilee Street Party
Ann & Mike Baldwin who painted and cleaned on many occasions
Members of the Tai Chi club who made a donation in memory of Marjorie Tucknott, one of the café’s long term volunteers.
Rob McCormack who advised, prepared, painted and provided electrical parts.
Gary Rolf and young people from Longhill who enjoyed a day learning new decorating skills.
Margaret Holding, Debbie Grant & Linda Paddock who kept the place clean and tidy whilst works were ongoing.
Paul Simson who gave hours of work fitting kitchens, hanging doors and generally making good.
The many residents who made both small and large monetary donations to pay for the electric rewire.
Woodingdean Community Association for their donations.
Charley Simson, Natalie Long and the volunteers at ‘Java’ who have kept the café running despite flooding and the ceiling collapsing!
and finally Dick Grant who supplied and fitted new lighting units and ceiling tiles to the café at the same time.
A brilliant example of the community pulling together.
Don’t forget ‘JAVA’ is open every day Monday-Friday 8am – 3pm, Saturday 8am-1pm and Sunday 9am -1pm for Breakfasts, Jacket potatoes, Omelettes, Salads, Sandwiches & Baguettes or just pop in for a delicious coffee.
We’d love to see you.
