Dignity Action Day at Nuffield Health Hospital in Woodindean

Friday 1 February saw 2013's Royal College of Nursing's Dignity Action Day and the team from Nuffield Health Brighton Hospital in Woodingdean got involved.

Dignity Action Day makes sure that patients who use care services are treated and respected as individuals. It is an event that takes place once a year and involves health and social care workers across the UK. Those who take part, go out of their way to promote dignity in their place of work and in their local community. The National Dignity Council has signed over 40,000 Dignity Champions who promote the campaign professionally and personally to help transform care services.

This year, Woodingdean's Nuffield Health Hospital team took part by asking the staff, patients and visitors to anonymously write down their thoughts about how the hospital in Woodingdean can promote dignity, and if there are areas that could potentially be improved. These responses were then posted in a box and will be reviewed in a meeting where common themes will be identified and shared with the staff.

Those involved were also asked to sum up, in five words, how they would want themselves or a loved one to be treated if they were in hospital. This was useful for the Nuffield team because 66 individuals took part in the campaign, resulting in loads of new ideas of how to improve dignity in their hospital, all of which reiterated the hospital intentions of taking care of all your healthcare needs.

The day was incredibly successful in raising awareness about the importance of dignity to the staff, patients and affiliates of Nuffield Health Hospital Brighton.
