Burning the Clocks Success

On Friday 21 Decemberwas Brighton's Burning the Clocks celebration. The event saw hundreds of handmade lanterns being paraded through Brighton to the sea front where they were passed into a fire to celebrate the winter solstice.

The theme for this years event was The Garden of Time. Those who took part in the event carried lanterns in the shapes of flower buds, fuchsias, crocuses and watering cans. There were dancers and fire jugglers who performed before the sunken clock face was set alight and burned to reveal a fire sun sculpture that, along with fireworks, lit up the sky.

Burning the Clocks was set up in 1994 by the arts charity Same Sky. This year was a special year because the event was crowd funded those who were involved in the event donated money buying lanterns, and donating online to raise money for the event. This year over 2,000 people took part in the parade and there were over 20,000 spectators.

This year was also a special year because it was Same Sky's 25th anniversary. The charity was set up in 1987 and ever since has inspiring people and communities through art. As part of the 'Burning the Clocks' celebration, Same Sky offers free lantern making workshops to those community groups that are disadvantaged or vulnerable for example this year, the charity ran workshops for a local father's support group and a group for young refugees and asylum seekers.
